The parish of Ballinaglera extends from Newbridge Church in Leitrim, to Doobally Church in Co. Cavan, and from the village of Dowra to Ballinaglera village and district. The county of Cavan,( Ir. An Cabhán –The Hollow Place), is one of the three counties of the old province of Ulster, and now part of the Irish republic. It was once part of the kingdom of Bréifne, which included Leitrim – of which the O’Rourkes were princes. In later times Cavan, or East Bréifne, became distinctively Bréifne-O’Reilly, whilst West Bréifne, or Leitrim, became Bréifne-O’Rourke. Cavan, previously part of Connacht, was designated a part of Ulster in the early 17th century.
The Roman Catholic cathedral of Kilmore diocese is in Cavan town; the Protestant cathedral is in Kilmore, near Cavan.
